PFW - Week 16: Snow & Birds

Saturday morning it was snowing between 7:00 and 8:00 which brought in more birds than I've seen in a while. Once the snow stopped and the sun came out, bird activity declined once again. But you know, even though it's only February, I am yearning more and more for Spring. This cold weather is growing old. Tulips and daffodils in bloom are being reported to the south so hopefully Spring is not too far off for St Louis.

Bird numbers weren't great as has been the case here, but I did have seven different species including the two winter birds: White-throated Sparrow and Dark-eyed Junco. And a pair of Mourning Doves has started to come around on regular basis this past week or so.
  • Mourning Dove 2
  • Song Sparrow 1
  • White-throated Sparrow 2
  • Dark-eyed Junco 1
  • Northern Cardinal 2
  • House Finch 2 (0 with eye disease)
  • House Sparrow 3

PFW - Week 15: Other Things To Do This Weekend

Not only did I skip Project FeederWatch this weekend, I also missed the Great Backyard Bird Count. But I had to take advantage of the long weekend to visit family and cheer on the Louisville Cardinals Men's basketball team in person. Louisville routed DePaul 99-54. The team seemed to be having a lot more fun yesterday after being routed by Notre Dame last Thursday. It was certainly a lot more fun for me and the rest of the fans.

GO CARDS!

PFW - Week 14: Repeat Performance

Gee, how discouraging. Another week of low low counts. The total this weekend was 5 house finches and 1 cardinal. But on a bright note, the weather has improved. The snow has melted and the temps rose to the upper 60's. The Cardinals were singing off in the distance. Spring can't be too far off!

Basketball

Well, it is college basketball season. If I don't have birds and a garden, I can post about this other favorite topic.

Unfortunately, Louisville's men's team lost to UConn Monday night. The Cardinals are still a good team, but UConn & the giant Thabeet just look too strong this year. The Lady Cardinal team is on a roll with the leadership of Angel McCaughtry. They've only had two losses this year ..... one of them to UConn. Go figure. Can both of UConn's teams win a National Title once again this year? I certainly hope not!

The Tennessee Lady Vols also lost Monday night to #2 Oklahoma. Hopefully Pat Summitt will reach her 1000th win tomorrow night against Georgia. In the meantime, check out this ESPN feature on Coach Summitt and her 18 year old son Tyler. It's a wonderful story and shows what a great person she is both on and off the court.

PFW - Week 13: Where were the birds?

I don't know where they all went. I had a total of 7 house finches and 1 cardinal all weekend. At least it's college basketball season. Tonight the Louisville Cardinals take on #1 UConn. Let's see if my Cardinals can beat the #1 team once again this season. A couple of weeks ago they beat the then #1 Pittsburgh Panthers.

And while I'm watching the Cardinals, I'll be keeping my eye on the Tennessee Lady Vols game, cheering them on to Pat Summitt's 1000 win.
